Stereotyping

Make notes speculating about the man in the image;

Who is he? What does he do? What is his story? WHY?  How do you know?

 He looks as if he is suffering alone and cold, this is suggested through again his pose in this still image. For example he is wearing a hat, he is on his own and not socialising with anyone, he has one hand in his pocket and he is smoking which may suggest a mild hint at depression. This clothing doesn’t match and looks very worn and cheap for example the patched up trousers and the trousers don’t match with the jacket.

Do the same for this woman:

This woman looks elderly which could imply that she may be retired and now devotes her life to looking after maybe her children or grandchildren judging by her innocent clothing and the way she is acting in public. The clothes that she is wearing can imply many things, first of which being her occupation which from what I can tell judging by stereotypes will be an author or someone who does or did something that needs imagination or creativity. I think this because her clothes look expensive and modern/contemporary and I think that she cares about how she express’ herself through the clothing she has chosen to wear. Also the glasses and shoes maybe furthermore bag look very expensive and trendy.

Then do the same for the Man 2:

This is all because of stereotypes in the clothing and indeed the fashion industry. Also the way that he is walking and his posture in this still image portrays a more camp man.

The Man 1 = Doug Bihlmaier buyer for Ralph Lauren.

The Woman = actress Julie Christie.
The Man 2 = Christian Louboutin, shoe designer.

  1. What do you think you have learned about representation from doing this activity? How might the media use our knowledge of stereotypes to portray characters in TV dramas? Edit this post and answer the above questions.

    Where is your self-representation task? How do you construct your own identity and what image do you project to the outside world? You need to complete this.
